Heidelberg in Autumn: The Best View in Town Isn't From the Castle

A late-autumn evening in Heidelberg, a path along the hillside and a glass in the right hotel. Why October is my favourite month there, and what gentlemen tell me about evenings like these.

Heidelberg has a problem: everyone goes to the castle. They stand there in rows, photographing the city from above while the lights come on below. I understand that. But ask me where to spend an October evening and you will get a different answer.

Across the Neckar. The Philosophers' Walk runs along the hillside, and from there the castle and the Old Bridge look the way they were meant to be seen: from a distance. Towards evening the leaves turn copper, the tourists are long gone back to the old town, and it gets quiet enough to hear your own footsteps. In Heidelberg [LINK: Heidelberg] this is the moment the city stops being a postcard.

Several gentlemen have told me that this was exactly where they had the conversation that never happened at the office. A path without a table in between changes a lot. You walk side by side, not across from each other. Nobody has to hold eye contact, which is precisely why it happens.

Afterwards the evening belongs in a house with composure. The Hotel Europäischer Hof is one: soft light, trained restraint, service that notices everything and comments on nothing. Arriving there, you don't have to explain yourself. That is what I mean when I call discretion a basic attitude. More on this in my entry about the Hotelbars Stuttgart that let an evening begin quietly.

One tip for anyone planning Heidelberg in autumn: bring comfortable shoes and a jacket you would happily put around someone's shoulders. The climbs are short but steep, and the wind off the Neckar is honest in October.

If you prefer it even quieter, my spot by the  Feuersee in Stuttgart is waiting, and if you need calm with a roof over your head, read how I spent two hours without my phone at the  Caracalla Therme. An autumn evening in Mannheim or Karlsruhe  has an entirely different rhythm, and I will write about that soon.

Heidelberg in October is not a backdrop. It is a promise to those who walk slowly.

Discreetly yours,
Lena
